concern because of the people staying in and around the affected area.

The Municipality Watchdog would like to know from Metrorail what they are going to do to ensure the health and safety of its commuters making use of their services on a daily basis. This comes after the Municipality Watchdog received numerous complains from commuters. This complains and pictures were submitted to Prasa and no feedback was received on the correspondence submitted to them.

According to the founder of the Municipality Watchdog, André Pieterse the Lanwen Station near Krugersdorp is currently being utilised as an illegal dumping site.

“Health risks posed by illegal dumping are frightening. The Municipality Watchdog believes children who play in open areas containing dumped waste are at risk of being injured by broken glass, sharp pieces of metal or other dangerous items in the waste.

“Also, perishable waste like discarded food creates an ideal breeding ground for bacteria. This property is also a hiding place for criminals and people in the area busy with illegal activities.

The Municipality Watchdog would like to see the CEO of Prasa (Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa), Mr Tshepo Lucky Montana   to intervene and to implement a strategy to keep commuters safe and look after their health whist they are waiting for the train to arrive. We would also like more staff to be deployed to stations to ease the congestion of passengers.

Public toilet facilities must be available to its commuters, whilst cleaning is outsourced to a reliable company. This will ensure stations and platforms will be kept clean on a daily basis.
